This is a novel set in France. Doctor Beaufrais and Father Pierre meet in a garden. While Father Pierre directs and acts in a film in Greece, he falls in love with the main actress, Calire.

He wants to leave the Roman Catholic Church and marry Calire. He seeks the advice of the Bishop and his friend Dr Beauvais. There is a court case and Father Pierre is sent away to Scotland.

After their honeymoon the couple return to France. Father Pierre discovers he has cancer. He is treated by Dr Beauvais, and Calire nurses him until his death. Doctor Beauvais and Calire meet two years later.

Monsignor, Brother Culpa, my gentlemen Brothers and Father Pierre.
You have called me, I am nervous but will do my best.
First, in my own defence. This Court is comprised of men.
There is not one single woman to side with, or protect me or my cause.
If you require revenge this is a good start.
Even the possibility of being advised or escorted by a nun has been denied.
God knows, a nun has not the kind of experience you require me to defend and therefore she might, in your eyes, be stained by me.
So - no support of women, no representative of the other half of God.
